چکیده

Two GFC (Generic Flow Control) protocols are currently under study within the CCITT, namely the BT/NTT proposal and the Australian proposal. In this paper, their basic operating principles are recalled. Then, since it has been recognized in earlier studies that Cell Delay Variation, or more precisely cell clumping, has a major impact on peak cell rate control performed in the Usage Parameter Control, a method for quantifying the magnitude of cell clumping in a cell stream is proposed. This method is subsequently applied for evaluating the magnitude of cell clumping introduced by the above GFC protocols. Although they provide for three priority levels, the analysis is carried out for one priority level only. Under the assumption that each tra c source transmits at its peak cell rate and that a cell spacing device is implemented in each Terminal Equipment, simulation results show that both GFC mechanisms are similar in terms of cell clumping.

Evaluation of Jitter Introduced by ATM Switches and Workstations a Performance Evaluation

As ATM cells pass through an ATM network, they experience a variable amount of delay as a result of queuing and switching delays at the switches. Real-time applications need a low intercell arrival time variance or their real-time needs will not be meet. Therefore, in order to analyze the end-to-end performance of real-time applications or to estimate the quality of service parameters (QoS) tha...

Unnoticeable Jitter in ATM Workstation Configurations

We evaluate the variation of inter-cell arrival times, namely jitter, as seen by a workstation. We present experimental results of actual jitter measurements on the FORE ASX200BX switch and a Pentium workstation running Linux. We analyze how the ATM network card device driver on a workstation perceives the jitter introduced by the network. We conclude from our data that the cell clumping that t...

Potential Capability of ATM to Support Network-Based Parallel Computing

This paper analyzes the potential capabilities of ATM networks for supporting parallel computing applications. The non-specific focus of current ATM standards, in addition to other technical issues including hardware architecture, protocols and operating systems, are limiting the potential performance of these environments. We evaluate the impact of ATM by considering a possible evolution of th...
